Alice P. (Arruda) Castanho, 90, of Tiverton, passed away Wednesday, July 16th, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
She was the widow of the late John M. Castanho.
Born in Fall River, she was a daughter of the late Manuel Arruda and the late Gilberta (Pereira) Arruda.
Alice worked for most of her career as a seamstress and later as a housekeeper at the Newport Navy Base, where she retired from. She was an active member of the community, belonging to the Holy Ghost Woman’s Guild, the Tiverton Senior Center, the Tiverton Athletic Booster Club, and the Sakonnet Schooner Booster Club. Alice found joy in knitting, playing bingo, and working on word searches. She cherished spending time with family and friends and was a devoted Boston Celtics fan, never missing a game.
She is survived by her son, John A. Castanho and his wife Eileen; her daughter, Sharon Beavis and her husband Jim; her grandchildren John Castanho (wife Sarah), Justin Castanho, and Taylor Beavis; her sisters, Joan Roy and Madeline Dias; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings Joseph Arruda and Mary Rodrigues.
A visitation will be held Sunday, July 20th, from 4 to 7 PM at the Oliveira Funeral Home at 215 Columbia Street in Fall River.
Her funeral will be held Monday, July 21, at 8:30 AM at the Oliveira Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM at Santo Christo Church. Interment will follow in Note Dame Cemetery, Fall River.
