FALL RIVER - Cynthia M. (Ponte) Simmons, 71, of Tiverton, RI, passed away Thursday, March 9th surrounded by her loving family at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of John E. Simmons.
Born in Tiverton, RI, she was a daughter of the late Manuel P. and Mary H. (Sousa) Ponte; she was a lifelong resident of Tiverton. Mrs. Simmons was employed before her retirement by the Town of Tiverton as assistant tax collector and assistant director of the Tiverton Senior Center.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Rebecca M. Simmons of Tiverton and Alicia M. Pimentel and her husband Jeffrey of Dighton, MA; a brother, Albert Ponte of Tiverton, RI; a step-brother, Fred Swarz of Portsmouth, RI; four grandchildren, Sarah Wenzel, Logan Pimentel, Lauren Pimentel and Emily Pimentel; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved dog "Lily".
Her funeral has been postponed to Wednesday, March 15th at 7:45 a.m. from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 2064 South Main Street, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Theresa Church, Stafford Road., Tiverton. Interment in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Main Road, Tiverton. Calling hours Monday 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Southcoas Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Narragansett Mill, 1565 North Main Street, Fall River, MA 02720.
