Edna Marie Tavares

Edna M. (Parsons) Tavares, age 86, of Tiverton passed away peacefully on May 29th. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who will be remembered for her fierce love, generous heart, and unmistakable spirit.

    Born in Newfoundland, Canada, Edna met her husband of 69 years Lawrence "Pee Wee" Tavares when he was stationed in the air force. They settled in his hometown of Tiverton, raising three children- Deborah, Darlene, and Larry. Edna worked for several years as a home health aide, both privately and for the Little Compton VNA.

    Edna's kitchen was the heart of her home, and her Sunday dinners were a cherished tradition. Family gathered weekly and friends always had a seat at the table. She found joy in giving to others—always quick to share a hot cup of coffee or home cooked meal with a friend or neighbor in need. Not even a stray cat went hungry in her presence.

    While known for her generosity, Edna was never one to hold her tongue. She spoke her mind, stood her ground, and told it like it was- often colorfully- but always from a place of love.

    Edna is survived by her husband Lawrence P. Tavares; three children Deborah A. Medeiros (John Medeiros Jr), Darlene F. Frates (Robert Frates) and Lawrence "Larry" Tavares (Tammy Tavares); two grandchildren John Medeiros III (Meredith Medeiros) and Heather (Medeiros) Spooner; five great-grandchildren Shane Medeiros, Robert "Robbie" Medeiros, Aidan Medeiros, Seidon Spooner and Ember Spooner, and her dog Tucker. Edna was the daughter of the late James and Maggie Parsons. She leaves her sister Marge McKay and several nieces and nephews in Canada.

    A funeral Mass will be held at St. Madeleine Sophie Chapel on Tuesday, June 3rd at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be private.
