Eugenia Mello

April 13, 1925 — August 18, 2016

Eugenia (Verissima) Ferreira Mello of Fall River, passed away on August 18, 2016, in her home after a brief illness at the age of 91. She was born in Fall River, daughter of the late Lauriano Ferreira and Cristina Costa. At the age of 18 months, she moved with her family to Furnas, Sao Miguel, Azores, where she grew up, met and married her husband, Manuel C. Mello. Eugenia returned to Fall River in 1948 and Manuel joined her the following year. Eugenia and Manuel were married for 65 years until his death in 2012.
Eugenia was the beloved mother of Cristina Ajemian (husband Raymond) of Bridgewater, MA; Lauriano (wife Kelly A. Moore) of Tiverton, RI; and the late Manuel Mello Jr. (wife Irene A.Viveiros) of Fall River.
She leaves her grandchildren David and Matthew Mello, Peter and Ani Ajemian and Leandra Mello, great-granddaughters Sabrina and Breauna Mello and great, great-grandson Mason. Another great, great-grandson will be welcomed in November.
Eugenia leaves her grieving sister Cristina Ferreira Pacheco of Fall River, her husband Manuel, their children Joseph, James, Manuel, Cristina Rocha, and David, their spouses, children and grandchildren. Also, her bereaved brother Joseph L. Ferreira of Somerset, his spouse Berta with whom she worked for many years, their daughter Susana Khan, her spouse, children and grandchildren. Eugenia's family includes her sister-in-law Maria do Espirito Santo Silva of Somerset and her family; sister-in-law Gloria Ferreira of Somerset and her family, and Antonio Melo of Toronto, Ontario, and his family; the late Maria Jose Melo of Furnas, Sao Miguel; the late Jose Melo, his late wife Luisa, their children and grandchildren.
Eugenia was employed first as a presser at Schneiderson's Apparel in Fall River, but worked for more than 25 years as a sewing machine operator at Bristol Knitting in Fall River. She loved her work, but was devoted to her home and her family. In her spare time, she produced many works of fine crochet which she displayed proudly in her home.
Eugenia's large circle of family and friends will miss her greatly.
Her funeral will be held Monday at 8 a.m. from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia St., followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in Santo Christo Church. Interment in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours Sunday 5-8 p.m. www.oliveira funeralhomes.com
