John Arruda

John Arruda, 94, of Fall River, MA died on Monday at Sarah Brayton Nursing Care Center. He was the husband of Silvana (Pereira) Arruda. Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Manuel and Joaquina (Fragoza) Arruda; he was a lifelong resident of Fall River. He served in the U.S. Air Corp, 306th Bombardment Group during World War II. He was a charter member of the Our Lady of Health Federal Credit Union and served as its treasurer from 1955 until 2005. Mr. Arruda was a member of Good Shepherd Parish. He was a member of the Fall River Fire Department for 28 years, retiring in 1985. He was also a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Massachusetts Retired Municipal Workers and the Fall River Municipal Retirees Association. John was an avid walker who was nicknamed "The Ironman" by his fellow Kennedy Park walkers.

Besides his wife, John is survived by his son Steven J. Arruda of Florida, his grandchildren, John, Kate and Jane Arruda; his great grandson, Marco Arruda; two sisters, Delores Ferreira and Margaret Abreu, both of Fall River; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Manuel Arruda, Mary "Lucy" Barreira, Joseph Arruda, Edward Arruda, Irene McIntyre and Joan Cabral.

His funeral will be held Wednesday at 8 a.m. from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 2064 South Main St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Good Shepherd Parish. Entombment in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation morning of funeral from 8-9:30 a.m. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society,P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
