Jose J. Fernandes

FALL RIVER… Jose J. Fernandes, 81, of Fall River, passed away Monday, February 20, 2023, at St. Anne’s Hospital, in Fall River.

He was the loving husband of Fidelia (Madruga) Fernandes.

Born in Mosteiros, St. Michael, Azores, he was a son of the late Antonio J. Fernandes and Ines (Melo) Fernandes. Jose immigrated to America in April of 1957 and lived here until his passing.

Prior to retiring, Jose worked in the construction industry and was a member of Local #230. He was a member of Fall River Sports Club since it’s founding and served as it’s president for several years. He was an avid Porto FC fan and enjoyed his daily walks, dancing, suntanning in the summer, and going on many vacations with his wife.

Along with his wife, survivors include his sons: Jose Fernandes (wife Dolores S.), Heath Fernandes (wife Karen), and Michael A. Fernandes, all of Fall River; his sister Maria de Fatima (Fernandes) Caldas (husband Antonio), of Fall River; his brother Manuel J. “M Jack” Fernandes (wife Marie), of Fall River: his grandsons: Cody H. Fernandes and Logan A. Fernandes; his nephews: Shawn S. Fernandes, Bobby Madruga, and Nathan Mathis; his niece: Ellen Chamberlin. He was the grandfather of the late Shane M. Fernandes.

His funeral will be held Saturday, February 25, at 9:00 AM, from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia St., Fall River, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at Santo Christo Church, Columbia St., Fall River. Interment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River. Calling hours will be held Friday night, from 5 - 8 PM.
