Fall River

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Martins, 91, on October 9th, 2026.

He was the beloved husband of Maria Jose Martins (Sousa), to whom he was married for 71 years.

Born April 2nd, 1935 in Sao Miguel, Azores, he was a son of the late Manuel Martins and Maria Da Conceicao Pereira.

Joseph had a hard working spirit, working as a union laborer for most of his career, retiring from Don Martin Corp. A man of many talents, his life was marked by a deep love for the outdoors, fishing trips, cooking and hands-on woodworking projects. He found joy tending to his vibrant vegetable garden and fruit trees and preparing comforting meals made from scratch. His woodworking skills transformed pieces of wood into beautiful, lasting creations crafted with care. His humor and gentle wisdom touched everyone he knew.

More than his talents, he found joy in sharing those gifts with those he loved., whether teaching a grandchild how to plant, crafting wooden pieces as a gift or sharing a well prepared meal for family and friends, they weren't just hobbies, rather his way of saying " I'm here I care and I love you".

Along with his wife, he is survived by his children Mary Jo Gordon (husband Robert), of South Dartmouth, and Philip Martins (wife Kathy), of Swansea; his granddaughters Kaytlin Gallagher, Brooklyn Martins, and Mckenna Martins, who will forever cherish the countless memories made together. He was predeceased by his sons Victor Martins and Joseph Martins II.

His visitation will be held Wednesday, October 14th, 2026, from 9:30-11 AM at the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia St., Fall River, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM at Santo Christo Church, Columbia St., Fall River. Interment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.

A link to livestream the funeral mass will be posted shortly.
