Lawrence P. Tavares, “Peewee” to those who knew him, age 92, passed away on January 2nd, 2026. He was the husband of the late Edna (Parsons) Tavares, his wife of 70 years, and a lifelong resident of Tiverton, RI. Peewee grew up on his grandparents’ family farm, where the 6th generation of his family still lives. He was a hard worker and provider, expressing his commitment to family through long days, high standards, and the business he built and sustained for over 40 years, L. Tavares Trucking & Excavating.
Peewee was known for his strong opinions, direct manner, and leaving a lasting impression. Many local properties reflect his distinctive vision. Beyond traditional excavating projects such as foundations, his work often incorporated stonework, foliage, ponds, and the occasional piece of yard art. Many local properties still bear the mark of his craftsmanship and style.
Peewee’s parents were the late Esther Medeiros and Larian Oliver. He is survived by three children Deborah A. Medeiros (John Medeiros Jr), Darlene F. Frates (the late Robert Frates) and Lawrence "Larry" Tavares (Tammy Tavares); two grandchildren John Medeiros III (Meredith Medeiros) and Heather (Medeiros) Spooner; and five great-grandchildren Shane Medeiros, Robert "Robbie" Medeiros, Aidan Medeiros, Seidon Spooner and Ember Spooner. He leaves his half-brother Manual “Popsie” Medeiros and several nieces and nephews.
