Joseph S. Mello

Joseph S. Mello, 81, of Somerset, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2023, at his home.

He was the widower of the late Maria Margaret (Correia) Mello, to whom he was married to for 57 years.

Born in Furnas, St. Michael, Azores, he was a son of the late Anibal Mello and Maria (Matos) Mello.

Mr. Mello was employed for several years at the former Whaling Manufacturing and at Goodyear Tire. After his retirement, he worked as a funeral attendant for the Oliveira Funeral Homes. Joseph was a devoted parishioner of Santo Christo Parish, where he and his late wife were involved in teaching catechism, assisting with the feast, and the Catholic Charities Appeal. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Msgr. Augusto Leal Furtado Council 12348. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing with his son, working on projects around his house, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his children: Deborah Sousa (Douglas), of Somerset, and Scott C. Mello (Maureen Canty-Mello), of Dudley; his grandchildren: Lauren Houston, Marisol Sousa, Amora Mello, and Christopher Mello; his sisters: Maria Ferreira and Anna Medeiros; several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Patrick Joseph Mello and brother of the late Anibal Mello, Jr., and Manuel Mello.

His funeral will be held Thursday, June 8th, from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia St, Fall River, at 9 AM, followed by a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM, at Santo Christo Parish. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, from 5 - 8 PM.
